ELIZABETH ROSE

January 23rd, 2012 by Dave Ruby Howe | No Comments | Filed in Hyperbole

Having built up a fierce reputation as a pusher of spectral electronic pop over the last year and a bit, 2012 looks to be the year that Elizabeth Rose really makes her mark. Her live show’s an unassumingly thumping affair, she’s getting backed by Inertia Access and now she’s deigned us with this new single ‘Ready’. Same intoxicating layered vocals with bubbling beats and fizzing electronics in the tightly packed production.

EVAN & THE BRAVE

January 17th, 2012 by Dave Ruby Howe | No Comments | Filed in Hyperbole

Bold proclamations usually come with the promise of eating non-consumable stuff so let me state for the record that if savvy advertising dudes won’t be clamouring to book Evan & The Brave’s single ‘Lil Monster’ for a delightfully twee ad campaign soon then I’ll happily eat like 20 hats.

RAINBOW CHAN

December 13th, 2011 by Dave Ruby Howe | No Comments | Filed in Hyperbole

It’s not too late to jump on board with the wonderful Rainbow Chan. The Sydney quirkster is back with Sweet Tooth, a slowly ebbing slice of downbeat pop music built on smushed bass grumbles and tinkering electronic touches that’re hard to resist.

WHYTE FANG

December 8th, 2011 by Dave Ruby Howe | No Comments | Filed in Hyperbole

You might’ve tuned into Whyte Fang’s stuff when the Sydney producer popped up on blogs with ‘Thy New Sound’ and that Nelly Furtado cover but now she’s back with a good wad of new material for everyone to blush about. Hooking up with Australian indie dreamers The Grates, Whyte Fang reinvents some tracks from the Brisbane band’s ‘Secret Rituals’ LP, turning the tightly wound garage tunes into dark and stormy electronic gems. The Grates remixed has always felt a little prickly but this works scarily well with Patience Hodgson howling all manic over these deep, throbbing electro textures and icy synth stabs.

VEEN

December 6th, 2011 by Dave Ruby Howe | No Comments | Filed in Hyperbole

I’ve been digging the sounds coming out of VEEN’s technicolour caravan and thankfully got along to their single launch in Sydney over the weekend to catch what could only be described as some kind of twisted, psychedelc electro burlesque show complete with dancers dancing, divas singing and VEEN leader Pete prowling about the stage in leather pants and thick heels. A rather apt reflection of the VEEN sound, then.

DREAM DELAY

November 16th, 2011 by Dave Ruby Howe | No Comments | Filed in Hyperbole

They may dub themselves as purveyors of something called ‘epictronica’ but such a sketchy word aside Dream Delay really nail this kind of starry, stadium electro. It’s all about thumping beats, no holds barred electro production, a dash of dubstep and, yep, very epic vocals. Get in now before they’re bigger than big.

CONVAIRE

November 14th, 2011 by Dave Ruby Howe | No Comments | Filed in Hyperbole

Convaire originally impressed with their sprightly, bubbly electro/indie track The New You which landed them on the radar of local Aussie tastemakers Future Classic. Dem guys have just put out Convaire’s debut EP and it rolls along really nicely with sharp guitars, buzzing electronics and stompy vocals. So what if they’ve got dino-sized boners for James Murphy, it works real well.

OLIVER TANK

November 9th, 2011 by Dave Ruby Howe | No Comments | Filed in Hyperbole

There was a collective lump in the throats of everyone who heard Oliver Tank’s sumptuous ‘Last Night I Heard Everything In Slow Motion’ tune earlier in the year and now the lad is returning to back it up with an EP on real good local label Yes Please Records. Pedestrian premiered a track from that EP just today and it shows more of what Tank initially won us over with including lush layers and trembling vocals. It’s not as complete as one might like but hopefully the full EP shows off more of his obviously deep gifts as a songwriter and producer.

BIG DUMB KID

November 9th, 2011 by Dave Ruby Howe | No Comments | Filed in Hyperbole

Is it too, um, hyperbolic of me to declare Big Dumb Kid to be Australia’s answer to Tyler, The Creator? Probably. And even if it is a little off base BDK’s got a totally distinct flow and wonderfully warped world view that informs his drowsy, Sydney slacker raps. Again I’m verging on the overblown but fuck. This kid’s a genius.

SURES

October 26th, 2011 by Dave Ruby Howe | No Comments | Filed in Hyperbole

So, let me explain my absence. Hyperbole has been looking like a ghost town for the last five or six weeks as I’ve started a new role at Australia’s big youth broadcaster, triple j, specifically programming the music for the newly launched digital radio station triple j Unearthed. It’s been pretty massive and I’ve been listening to even more music than ever before. So that’s going to be reflected as I continue to blog, most likely with squillions more new Australian artists. Let’s start with one of my new favourite finds; Sures. Fuck these guys are on point. Cruisey, cool and surfy, it’s just got a killer vibe. And in the blink of an eye they’ve gone from essentially unknown to landing a Best Coast support this summer. Perfect timing.
