ES IST SUPER X BROKERS

This remix of Es Ist Super’s bouncy and bright single ‘Perfect Summer’ from fellow locals Brokers is likely the best thing to come out of Adelaide. No need to keep going with that sentence, even if Adelaide was the Metropolis of Australia this track would still be unsurpassed. Sax, beats and off-kilter production. Give these two groups the key to the city (when you get them back of Cher’s eBay account).

As far as genius Australian beatmakers go it’s hard to look past the individual talents of Perth’s Ta-ku and Sydney-sider Flume who’ve been burning up ears around the country and then onwards across the globe with their stirring and original productions. It was many moons ago that everyone grew tired of the Hype Machine popular charts becoming clogged up with remix after remix of ‘unconventional’ songs – need we revisit that Please Mr. Postman dubstep remix? But I can’t help but be charmed by what Sydney producer Altisko has done to Caring Is Creepy (yes, the Shins song). There’s some clever work behind the drum pad with skittering hats and thumping kicks and just an overwhelmingly bliss-y vibe. More songs on his Soundcloud and his Unearthed page.

THE BELLIGERENTS

It seems like a good time to be in Queensland. Throw a stone and you’ll likely hit a group of handsome young lads wagging their guitars about and making tight little jams. Among that lot are The Belligerents, more sun-bathed dudes from up north and with their latest cut Infatuation they too seem like they’re having dickloads of fun bouncing around and partying. The tune comes with an extra smooth remix from fellow Maroon and certified disco funk genius Wolfwolf. Yes to the ten thousandth degree.

WHYTE FANG

You might’ve tuned into Whyte Fang’s stuff when the Sydney producer popped up on blogs with ‘Thy New Sound’ and that Nelly Furtado cover but now she’s back with a good wad of new material for everyone to blush about. Hooking up with Australian indie dreamers The Grates, Whyte Fang reinvents some tracks from the Brisbane band’s ‘Secret Rituals’ LP, turning the tightly wound garage tunes into dark and stormy electronic gems. The Grates remixed has always felt a little prickly but this works scarily well with Patience Hodgson howling all manic over these deep, throbbing electro textures and icy synth stabs.

BIG DUMB KID

Is it too, um, hyperbolic of me to declare Big Dumb Kid to be Australia’s answer to Tyler, The Creator? Probably. And even if it is a little off base BDK’s got a totally distinct flow and wonderfully warped world view that informs his drowsy, Sydney slacker raps. Again I’m verging on the overblown but fuck. This kid’s a genius.

I’ve been hearing the debut album from Aussie rapper 360 for the last week and there’s some pretty interesting twists and turns in there that you often don’t expect from the skip-hop crowd including stinging electro production and some intelligent pop sensibilities. That approach continues with the promo for Killer with EMI getting local beatmaker Redial on board for a banger makeover. Sorted.
