KIMBRA

August 8th, 2011 by Dave Ruby Howe | No Comments | Filed in Hyperbole

Kimbra continues to soar with her jubilant, technicolour pop winners and before we get a full album’s worth of ‘em with September’s ‘Vows’ LP here we have standout single ‘Cameo Lover’ getting a very electronic makeover from Sam Sparro and his mate Golden Touch. It works, believe it or not. Dig in.

HAMMOCKS AND HONEY

July 20th, 2011 by Dave Ruby Howe | No Comments | Filed in Hyperbole

Special Awards Records just rocketed a few indie doodles to full erection with the Hammocks And Honey remix EP which features reworks from local faves like Faux Pas and Collarbones. I’m really feeling the Hidden Suns remix so hit that up below along with the gloomy Fatti Frances rework.

GOSTS

May 23rd, 2011 by Dave Ruby Howe | No Comments | Filed in Hyperbole

Witch house comes to Melbourne! GOSTS have been dropping some wonderfully crunchy dark dance treats on their Bandcamp page recently including a whole new album just the other week. I first vibed to their s/t EP and have been meaning to post some ish from that for a month or more. Here’s some “sad but cool”/”sad rave” tunes from that collection. Really hope they can pick up some work on the back of this.

SOCCER LEGENDS

May 5th, 2011 by Dave Ruby Howe | No Comments | Filed in Hyperbole

It was only a matter of time before Melbourne kids started aping leather jacketed icons other than The Strokes. There’s definitely a Crystal Castles vibe on this joint from Soccer Legends, and not just from the defunct chiptune fuzz but with the basic drum machine pattern and the writhing vocal delivery. And they/he/she/it has a cool name.

KIMBRA

You’ll have to excuse the recent Australian-centric content on this blog. But at least it’s been good – not to mention actually happening, given the frequent droughts in posts. That continues with Kimbra’s latest gem, Cameo Lover.

The title sounds like a lost Vanity 6 tune but unwrapped its all big, smiling chamber pop excellence which has now been perfectly rendered with the above video treatment.

YOUNG MAVERICK

April 26th, 2011 by Dave Ruby Howe | No Comments | Filed in Hyperbole

At first I heard Young Maverick’s Dale Denton and was like, ‘holy woah’. And then it was Ariel and I was thrown for another loop. God damn these guys are fantastic. It’s like they stumbled upon a studio basement with Gordon Raphael’s withered skeleton behind the boards and cut some wonderfully poppy garage gold. All wiry guitar riffs and clip-clopping drums and Jesus Christ just download the tunes!

You can hear more Young Maverck jams on the band’s Facebook page and if these are any indication you definitely want to.

HUNTING FOXES

April 26th, 2011 by Dave Ruby Howe | No Comments | Filed in Hyperbole

There’s no shortage of good bands doing spry, dance-able indie stuff and Melbourne dudes Hunting Foxes can now be counted in the thick of that scene with newie tune Dance Again, Baby. The vocals could probably use a different treatment but the track itself is quite the little rocket with those hissing drums and turbo synths.

LEAGUES

January 19th, 2011 by Dave Ruby Howe | No Comments | Filed in Hyperbole

‘Leagues…that’s a cool band name’. Yeah, that was the only reasoning I had for sussing out Leagues on triple j Unearthed last week but shit I’m glad I did as they are some phenomenally talented young dudes. Describing themselves as progressive shoegaze, Leagues live up to their boasts with some particularly icy tunes which trade off initially barren beginnings for a barrage of beats (processed and organic), waves of guitar squall and synth atmospherics. I’m seriously enamoured by what these Melbourne boys are doing. I hope you will be too.

LOON LAKE

January 16th, 2011 by Dave Ruby Howe | No Comments | Filed in Hyperbole

Gosh this is some tight, sunny indie goodness. Melbourne dudes Loon Lake have been impressing for a minute with their breezy garage jams but In The Summer just might be their most perfect tune yet with its brisk pace, choppy riffs and instantly hummable vocals. Grab it and feel a little envious of the southern hemisphere.

Melbourne live disco troupe World’s End Press have been bubbling up in a big way and their new Faithful EP has put them even further up my ladder of next big things. What’s even better is they grabbed my main man Gloves to drop in a remix of the title jam. Hot, right? Grab it below and then get onto their Facebook page and follow their every move and bodily function.
