C1 brings some smooth, melodic and modern beats to the table and Allday promptly crushes them on the bottom of a stubby before snorting the dust up his nose with a fiver. This is skewed, technicolour Australian rap. And it’s bloody brilliant.
No doubt you’ve come into contact with a force of ‘fury’ over the years whether it be fury of fists or balls alike but with Melbourne noise-makers Damn Terran you’re getting in a different way. Indeed, the band themselves term it ‘post-punk-fury’ and I’d like to add it comes with some fiery femme howling and an intense attitude that just SLAYS.
Up to now Melbourne’s Dirt Farmer have been impressing with their steady output of sad-eyed alt-country-indie-soul but with new single ‘Kick It’ the dudes throw back the curtain revealing that underneath the plaid they rock some serious pop chops. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, this song is perfect. Fight me if you think otherwise.
There’s some nicely twisted beats emanating from Melbourne right now courtesy of production twosome 2Sugars. We’ve Got Our Obsessions is the pick of the bunch for me, an elegant little puncher with precise sample manipulation but scope out their Soundcloud for a fuckload of other beats currently on the boil.
This isn’t the first time I’ve swooned over Taxidermy Hall – the Victorian electronic savant creating plush synth driven pop. The dude’s back with a new tune that benefits from some sweet boy/girl traded vocals. How is this lad not a thousand times more popular?
I know it’s been a while since I posted something that could be considered ‘straight-up dance music’ on Hyperbole but this track should atone for that. And then some.
John Chamberlain – or Chambo as it looks like he’s changing his name to – comes to us from Melbourne at the ripe young age of of 21 and already he’s creating crystalline bangers of the highest pedigree. I’m particularly boner-ised by Suburban Noise, a heaving yet euphoric slab of trousey goodness. What a description! Suburban Noise by John Chamberlain Music
We’ve been totally smashing Them Swoops on the radio recently and here’s why; they rule. They’re a bunch of bros out of Melbourne who manage to create a nice, full sound of breezy guitars, brisk tempos and blockbuster choruses that’ll lodge themselves in your ears. Permanently. And that’s a very good thing.
Them Swoops – Too Fast For Love
Them Swoops – Work Around It
How good is this guy? And seemingly being slept on like crazy. But Taxidermy Hall has so many good tunes already bulging through the seams of his arsenal that he won’t stay a secret for much longer. Check out some gorgeousness below.
While the bulk of the other stuff on their Unearthed page is a bit more drawn and stripped back there’s just no resisting Lyd & Sophie’s spicy little jam, Kiss Me. Sounding like they’ve borrowed an old Stock Aitken Waterman beat, the Melbourne sisters bounce all over this tune with gleeful grins and blushed cheeks. Check it.
Lyd & Sophie – Kiss Me
The Rat vs Possum lads have upped the synth factor on their giddy garage steez and come out with this little gem, Fat Monk, the first tune to come from their newie LP ‘Let Music And Bodies Unite’. Grab it below or at their Bandcamp with other goodies.
Hyperbole is a dope music blog which was formerly located at http://masshyperbole.blogspot.com for around four years before the plug was pulled by the powers that be. It lives on, hopefully better than ever here on Hyperbole.tv.
Dave Ruby Howe is a music journalist, blogger and editor from Sydney, AUS. Hyperbole is his music blog about music, writing and music writing. But not writing music. Get it? Cool.
Dave Ruby Howe is also the Assistant Music Director of Australia Music at triple j, serving as the music director for the recently launched digital radio station, triple j Unearthed. As such a lot of what's blogged on here comes from there. Because it's all so awesome.
