Bold proclamations usually come with the promise of eating non-consumable stuff so let me state for the record that if savvy advertising dudes won’t be clamouring to book Evan & The Brave’s single ‘Lil Monster’ for a delightfully twee ad campaign soon then I’ll happily eat like 20 hats.
Evan & The Brave – Lil Monster
How good is this guy? And seemingly being slept on like crazy. But Taxidermy Hall has so many good tunes already bulging through the seams of his arsenal that he won’t stay a secret for much longer. Check out some gorgeousness below.
So, let me explain my absence. Hyperbole has been looking like a ghost town for the last five or six weeks as I’ve started a new role at Australia’s big youth broadcaster, triple j, specifically programming the music for the newly launched digital radio station triple j Unearthed. It’s been pretty massive and I’ve been listening to even more music than ever before. So that’s going to be reflected as I continue to blog, most likely with squillions more new Australian artists. Let’s start with one of my new favourite finds; Sures. Fuck these guys are on point. Cruisey, cool and surfy, it’s just got a killer vibe. And in the blink of an eye they’ve gone from essentially unknown to landing a Best Coast support this summer. Perfect timing.
The second that you hear that breathy insistence that ‘we need a holiday’ in New Navy’s Zimbabwe it’s like you’ve heard the song one hundred times before, it’s instantly familiar and warm and intoned on your ear drums. It’s just that good.
Now the Aussie group (and new Future Classic family members) are giving away a new Lancelot remix of the tune that amps up the nodding vibes when the bass thumps come in. You might or might not know this kid as one half of old mates Aeons and he’s continuing to find his feet as a technically sound solo producer.
So Camden Chan is clearly a huge new talent that has the potential to be a big deal upon the Australian indie-sphere with his bowties, hyper-literate narratives and UK-dreaming guitar pop tunes. In a landscape where less is more and that means easy choruses with big, shouty lyrics, Camden’s stuff sticks out like an expertly manicured thumb and the tunes below sit somewhere between Morrissey and early Libertines jams.
If you were a kid exploring the Australian alt scene in the early to mid ’00s then it was pretty much required that you see Faker live. I remember seeing them support End Of Fashion* at Canberra’s infamous Green Room once upon a time and chatting with lead singer Nathan following the show for a while. Back then they were still pretty raw and Nathan was lovely and following that they kind of exploded into a big pop rock entity, far beyond the squalid, barely-raised stage of The Green Room.
If there’s a point to all this rambling bloggery it’s that Faker is back to assert their spot at the top of the Aus-rock heap and after Birds of Tokyo dominating that scene for far too long we could use something that’s kinda fun and energetic like Faker. And we get a CSS remix to boot!
Your daily dose of rough-shot, throaty indie rock comes from new finds Camp Island and their Bandcamp demo Karate Kastles. It’s all about hissing cymbals, scrappy swells of guitar fuzz and the energy that comes with kids in their basement running out of breath after an ‘intense’ jam together.
Camp Island – Karate Kastles
There’s no shortage of good bands doing spry, dance-able indie stuff and Melbourne dudes Hunting Foxes can now be counted in the thick of that scene with newie tune Dance Again, Baby. The vocals could probably use a different treatment but the track itself is quite the little rocket with those hissing drums and turbo synths.
Spotlight-shunning Sydney kids Ghostwood have been quiet for a little while now, presumably finishing school and just being their terrifically enigmatic selves, but now they’re back with a few new demos to keep fans happy. The good news is that they’ve still got the whole hazy garage thing nailed. The better news is that they’re a smidge more palatable underneath the reverb, showing off some very nice hooks on Sunset Mirage.
Gosh this is some tight, sunny indie goodness. Melbourne dudes Loon Lake have been impressing for a minute with their breezy garage jams but In The Summer just might be their most perfect tune yet with its brisk pace, choppy riffs and instantly hummable vocals. Grab it and feel a little envious of the southern hemisphere.

Hyperbole is a dope music blog which was formerly located at http://masshyperbole.blogspot.com for around four years before the plug was pulled by the powers that be. It lives on, hopefully better than ever here on Hyperbole.tv.
Dave Ruby Howe is a music journalist, blogger and editor from Sydney, AUS. Hyperbole is his music blog about music, writing and music writing. But not writing music. Get it? Cool.
Dave Ruby Howe is also the Assistant Music Director of Australia Music at triple j, serving as the music director for the recently launched digital radio station, triple j Unearthed. As such a lot of what's blogged on here comes from there. Because it's all so awesome.
