DRACULA PALMS

January 19th, 2012 by Dave Ruby Howe | No Comments | Filed in Hyperbole

The bubbling synth line that kicks off ‘Pretty Lady’ from Brisbane duo Dracula Palms is a bit like riding the skies with Marty McFly in the Delorean, tracking back in time to when MGMT were still fun to listen to. That reference point is pretty obvious but you’ll see it’s also pretty apt. It shouldn’t matter though as the world could certainly use a little more technicolour disco pop like this.

WHYTE FANG

December 8th, 2011 by Dave Ruby Howe | No Comments | Filed in Hyperbole

You might’ve tuned into Whyte Fang’s stuff when the Sydney producer popped up on blogs with ‘Thy New Sound’ and that Nelly Furtado cover but now she’s back with a good wad of new material for everyone to blush about. Hooking up with Australian indie dreamers The Grates, Whyte Fang reinvents some tracks from the Brisbane band’s ‘Secret Rituals’ LP, turning the tightly wound garage tunes into dark and stormy electronic gems. The Grates remixed has always felt a little prickly but this works scarily well with Patience Hodgson howling all manic over these deep, throbbing electro textures and icy synth stabs.

ARGENTINA

November 17th, 2011 by Dave Ruby Howe | No Comments | Filed in Hyperbole

It was a ridiculously easy decision to make Alex Ritchie, aka Argentina, the feature artist on triple j Unearthed the other week. As soon as I and the other members of the team heard his music and its charmingly Australian take on modern synth pop it became clear that it was a no brainer. This kid is really something special. The electronic pop element is certainly very current but it’s fused with really considered songwriting and a set of influences far removed from dance music including richly layered vocal harmonies and a nice sense of spacing so that not everything hits all at once. It’s impressive stuff.

GO VIOLETS

There’s no shortage of jangly, loose lo-fi indie coming out of Australia at this very GD second but this joint from Go Violets hits a sweet spot.

IRRELEVANT CELEBRITIES

August 12th, 2011 by Dave Ruby Howe | No Comments | Filed in Hyperbole

Old mate Youth is at it again, this time hooking up with Richard Alexander for a combo release as Irrelevant Celebrities. So far they’ve revealed four tracks in the set and as you’d hope/expect from Youth it’s all about tightly wound, retro-fabulous late night dance workouts. This is definitely a good thing.

YOUTH

June 18th, 2011 by Dave Ruby Howe | No Comments | Filed in Hyperbole

I haven’t posted anything from my boy Youth in ages. Too long! But don’t let that make you think he’s not been busy, no, in between dusting off the disco gems at whatever parties are lucky enough to have him, Youth’s been busy doing more of his Young Edits and this time he’s taken on Where Is My Mind? by rock royalty The Pixies. Big call, kid, but it’s a goodie!
