THE FIGHTING LEAGUE

November 15th, 2011 by Dave Ruby Howe | No Comments | Filed in Hyperbole

The coolest kids from when I was in Canberra seem like they’re still real cool and now they’ve got their shit together as The Fighting League and are releasing a real-deal full length record on Dream Damage in December. It’s rugged punk rock with nods to coast trips and tropical fruit punch and you really need to get on it now.

CONVAIRE

November 14th, 2011 by Dave Ruby Howe | No Comments | Filed in Hyperbole

Convaire originally impressed with their sprightly, bubbly electro/indie track The New You which landed them on the radar of local Aussie tastemakers Future Classic. Dem guys have just put out Convaire’s debut EP and it rolls along really nicely with sharp guitars, buzzing electronics and stompy vocals. So what if they’ve got dino-sized boners for James Murphy, it works real well.

SONPSILO CIRCUS

November 14th, 2011 by Dave Ruby Howe | No Comments | Filed in Hyperbole

Before this blog becomes all Sydney all the time check out some embarrassingly young and talented kids from the other side of the country; it’s Perth’s Sonpsilo Circus. They’ve just offered up their first EP and it’s chockers with big meaty slabs of classic rock and soaring vocal parts to make your head dizzy.

OLIVER TANK

November 9th, 2011 by Dave Ruby Howe | No Comments | Filed in Hyperbole

There was a collective lump in the throats of everyone who heard Oliver Tank’s sumptuous ‘Last Night I Heard Everything In Slow Motion’ tune earlier in the year and now the lad is returning to back it up with an EP on real good local label Yes Please Records. Pedestrian premiered a track from that EP just today and it shows more of what Tank initially won us over with including lush layers and trembling vocals. It’s not as complete as one might like but hopefully the full EP shows off more of his obviously deep gifts as a songwriter and producer.

BIG DUMB KID

November 9th, 2011 by Dave Ruby Howe | No Comments | Filed in Hyperbole

Is it too, um, hyperbolic of me to declare Big Dumb Kid to be Australia’s answer to Tyler, The Creator? Probably. And even if it is a little off base BDK’s got a totally distinct flow and wonderfully warped world view that informs his drowsy, Sydney slacker raps. Again I’m verging on the overblown but fuck. This kid’s a genius.

How good is this guy? And seemingly being slept on like crazy. But Taxidermy Hall has so many good tunes already bulging through the seams of his arsenal that he won’t stay a secret for much longer. Check out some gorgeousness below.

SURES

October 26th, 2011 by Dave Ruby Howe | No Comments | Filed in Hyperbole

So, let me explain my absence. Hyperbole has been looking like a ghost town for the last five or six weeks as I’ve started a new role at Australia’s big youth broadcaster, triple j, specifically programming the music for the newly launched digital radio station triple j Unearthed. It’s been pretty massive and I’ve been listening to even more music than ever before. So that’s going to be reflected as I continue to blog, most likely with squillions more new Australian artists. Let’s start with one of my new favourite finds; Sures. Fuck these guys are on point. Cruisey, cool and surfy, it’s just got a killer vibe. And in the blink of an eye they’ve gone from essentially unknown to landing a Best Coast support this summer. Perfect timing.

360

October 2nd, 2011 by Dave Ruby Howe | No Comments | Filed in Hyperbole

I’ve been hearing the debut album from Aussie rapper 360 for the last week and there’s some pretty interesting twists and turns in there that you often don’t expect from the skip-hop crowd including stinging electro production and some intelligent pop sensibilities. That approach continues with the promo for Killer with EMI getting local beatmaker Redial on board for a banger makeover. Sorted.

Guerre and The Paper Scissors are a match made in uncertainty but any doubts you might have going into this remix are quickly squashed. He nails it again.

NANTES

September 19th, 2011 by Dave Ruby Howe | No Comments | Filed in Hyperbole

This is sort of an anthem in the making from Sydney crew Nantes and as soon as it strikes up you can tell why. There’s those racing drums, some stirring piano plonks and a gosh darn chant-a-log in the middle. Look out, universe.
