AEONS

June 26th, 2010 by Dave Ruby Howe | No Comments | Filed in Hyperbole

Are Aeons the next great white hope of Australian electro? If we hadn’t decided already then that’s a definitive yes. Now the Sydney duo have released their debut EP, Beyond The Sattelites, produced by blog-darling Diamond Cut. What’s even better is that they’ve put it out for free on Bandcamp. Yup, zero friggin’ dollars.

Head over here to grab the EP but check out the tracks below for some bonus Aeons goodness including their Dead Or Alive cover and a sneaky remix from the Like Woah!/Ted & Francis camp.

KORALLREVEN

June 26th, 2010 by Dave Ruby Howe | No Comments | Filed in Hyperbole

Following up the original 7″ release on the impeccable Acephale imprint, Korallreven are here unraveling a score of tasty sounding remixes for their well loved deep-pop gem The Truest Faith, with CFCF and Sail A Whale included in the package. That’s a great way to start, no? It gets even better with the first cut from the remix disc, coming from Swiss sonic explorers Ghostape who turn Korallreven’s shiny, synthy, beachy jam into a infinite loop of drums, drums and a lot more drums. It’s as interesting as it sounds.

MR FLASH

June 25th, 2010 by Dave Ruby Howe | 1 Comment | Filed in Hyperbole

Like many others, I have a giddy love for Darwin Deez which stems mostly from the wonderful Radar Detector. But, being the Grinch of the indie community that I apparently am, I just didn’t think he could be remixed. My bad.

Taking up the challenge with all the signature Ed Banger prowess he could muster, Mr Flash takes Mr Deez’s Up In The Clouds at its most literal, taking the original to new heights with gorgeous gilded synth slides and slowly encompassing production. If you didn’t grab it from the other million places that posted it, make sure you get it now.

MIXTAPE

June 19th, 2010 by Dave Ruby Howe | No Comments | Filed in Hyperbole

So this is something I’ve been meaning to do for a while now. Is it a podcast? Is it a mixtape? I’m not entirely sure, which, yep, is like me. And the name? Hypercast? Yeah I’ll probably get over that pretty quickly.

But the point is, I’ve always wanted to something like this. I’m always making mixtapes. Even if they don’t have a recipient, I’ll be selecting and sequencing every week. So as Hyperbole is all shiny and new, this is the perfect place to start posting some mixtapes.

As an idea of what to expect, please know that although they’re ‘mixed’, they’re by no means expertly mixed. I don’t have those kind of skills. It’s just about the tunes anyway. So every now and then I’ll be pushing out a new tape of jams, young and old, that I am buzzing about. Here’s the first batch.

Hyperbole – Hypercast #1

Midnight Juggernauts – Virago Reprise (Windy Night)
The Notorious B.I.G. – Gimme The Loot
The Drums – Me And The Moon
Uffie – Give It Away
Monarchy – Love Get Out Of My Way (Holy Ghost! ft. Dixon Dub)
Voltage – All Night (Original Mix)
Brooklyn Dreams – Street Man (12″ Mix)
Aeroplane – We Can’t Fly (Extended Drums Mix)
Lake Heartbeat – Between Dreams
The Originals – Baby I’m For Real
Carly Simon – Why (12″ Mix)
Koji Kondo – The Legend of Zelda – Triforce Catch Fanfare

JINJA SAFARI

June 17th, 2010 by Dave Ruby Howe | 6 Comments | Filed in Hyperbole

I had the chance to check out the ‘first’ official show from Sydney indie-pop squad Jinja Safari over the weekend when the lads took supporting honours for Miami Horror’s just-wrapped national tour and once the Jinja Safari crew had wrapped their set I wasn’t the only one with a giddy grin plastered on my face.

But let’s backtrack to the set itself. Bounding about with endless energy, Jinja Safari performed like this was their 100th gig really, they were impressively tight. Mixing island-keyboards with erratic guitar squall, low-slung bass and some double-duty percussion – with the bongo/xylophone maestro rolling around on stage barefoot – the set was a lot of fun to watch. Which is really all you can ask for.

Expect to hear a lot about these guys from here on out, that’s a certainty. In the meantime, grab first cut Peter Pan below and head to Unearthed to show them some more love.

VOLTAGE

June 15th, 2010 by Dave Ruby Howe | 2 Comments | Filed in Hyperbole

The blogosphere loves Cut Copy and it’s a no brainer that we’ll love Voltage. It’s the new project from Dan Whitford and old buddy Nile Delta and the first offering from the duo, All Night, might be one of the most dangerously smooth tracks of the year.

Pulse synthesizer flourishes mixed with a disco drum track and a pumping chorus make this a truly unstoppable little jam. It’s made all the more incredible by the vocal turn from Ghoul’s Ivan, who also laid down vocals for Seekae’s last record. He’s like some strange house music siren on this, and it’s amazing to hear.

Better still is the package of remixes put together for the Cutters release including Andy Juggernaut’s Turkish Prison mix, In Flagranti and Azari & III all of which complement the original brilliantly. Such a wonderful release. Grab the radio edit below and then pick the whole bag up at Beatport.

MEMORY TAPES

Does Dayve Hawk ever sleep? Probably yes, but it definitely makes you wonder when his output is this prolific, not to mention this good.

IS TROPICAL

June 7th, 2010 by Dave Ruby Howe | 1 Comment | Filed in Hyperbole

Is Tropical are another one of those acts that I keep hearing the name of uttered in breathlessly excited tones and it’s been that way for a few months now, so I’ve done my best to stalk them from a distance. But I couldn’t keep silent about them any longer, they’ve got that wild-eyed spark that you just can’t refuse. And they mixed what is probably my favourite track from Tourist History. So, double win.

RADIANT DRAGON

June 4th, 2010 by Dave Ruby Howe | No Comments | Filed in Hyperbole

Radiant Dragon gets more and more interesting as he gets weirder and weirder. And that’s like every tune. So consider these two remixes of spacey, drifting electronic loopiness to be but a small peak inside Radiant Dragon’s technicolour-spattered mind/basement.

O CHILDREN

June 2nd, 2010 by Dave Ruby Howe | No Comments | Filed in Hyperbole, Writing

This ran on The Cool Hunter last week, another site which I pour a lot of energy into. I love what these dudes are doing too, so any chance to spread the gospel is worth taking.

O. Children – Heirs To The Throne

You don’t even need to have functioning ears to know that UK gloomsters O. Children have a serious thing for Nick Cave, after all it’s right there in the band’s name, the band’s homage to the enduring Australian icon. But for those of us with the use of our ears, Cave’s influence once again shines through on the London four-piece who tackle the kind of white-knuckled gothic rock that Cave engineered with The Birthday Party, adding in their own unblinking youthfulness to the dense caterwaul.

What caps the package off though is singer and lyricist Tobi O’Kandi, whose thick, towering baritone reverberates across every song, sounding almost impossibly more powerful than the ringing percussion and jagged guitars raging around him. – Dave Ruby Howe.
